The semi-final matches are now set for the 2020 Match Play Championships. After quarter final action on Sunday, June 14, Austin Dobrescu of the Shilo Country Club in the men’s division, Hannah Diamond of St. Charles Country Club in the women’s division and Garth Collings of Breezy Bend Country Club in the senior men’s division will all move on to defend their 2019 titles in the next round that will take place on Saturday, June 20.
The bracket for the first round of the 2020 Golf Manitoba Match Play Championship has now been set. The top 32 amateur men, top 16 senior men and the top 8 amateur women from this past weekend’s qualifying event at the Winkler Centennial Golf Course will play their first round matches starting this Friday and Saturday at the St. Charles Country Club.
On the amateur women’s side, 2019 Match Play Champion Hannah Diamond will defend her title on home soil and as the number 7 seed taking on the number 2 seed, Charmaine Mackid of the Breezy Bend Country Club. Bobbi Uhl of Shilo Country Club will start the finals as the number 1 seed taking on Veronica Vetesnik who is playing out of the Kingswood Golf & County Club. On the senior men’s side, 2019 Match Play Champion Garth Collings will open the championship matches as the number 1 seed where he will meet club mate and number 16 seed Brant Greer of Breezy Bend Country Club. The amateur men will open the championship matches on Friday, June 12. Number 1 seed Marco Trstenjak of Elmhurst Golf & Country Club will meet number 32 seed Kolby Day of the Wheat City Golf Course. 2019 Match Play Champion Austin Dobrescu of the Shilo Country Club will defend his title as the number 2 seed taking on number 31 seed Jordon McDonald of Breezy Bend Country Club. Austin Dobrescu of Shilo Country Club continued his hot play this season with a T31 finish at the Golf Canada Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship that was played August 5-8 at the Glen Arbour Golf Course and The Links at Brunello in Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia. Dobrescu, a member of Team Manitoba that finished 5th in the Willingdon Cup inter-provincial team championship, was the lone Manitoban to make the cut in this year’s event shooting rounds of 76-74-72-71 for a 293 total. Equally impressive in his feat, Dobrescu was in a tie for 11th for Canadians who made the cut in what has now become a top international event on the world amateur golf circuit.
Adding to his impressive finish at the Canadian Amateur, Dobrescu, who plays collegiate golf for the Chicago State NCAA Division I Cougars, started the season with a win at the Golf Manitoba Match Play Championship, finished T3rd in the Elmhurst Invitational and had a runner-up finish in the Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship.
Upon his return to Manitoba, Dobrescu will have little time to rest as he was recently awarded a sponsor’s exemption into the 2019 Players Cup, the local stop on the PGA Tour Canada Mackenzie Tour, that will take place August 12-18 at the Southwood Golf & Country Club.
WINNIPEG, MB – The Golf Manitoba Match Play Championship concluded on Saturday, June 15 with the championship matches taking place at Breezy Bend Country Club.
In the senior division, Garth Collings of Breezy Bend took his home course advantage against Tom Humniski of Elmhurst Golf & Country Club. Collings ended the 18-hole final on the 14th hole with a 5 & 4 victory. The victory was redemption for Collings who lost in the 2018 final.
In the women’s division, Hannah Diamond of St. Charles Country Club met match play qualifier medalist Bobbi Uhl of Shilo Country Club in the 36-hole final. On the 35th hole of the match, Diamond sealed the deal and successfully defended her 2018 Match Play Championship title with a 2 & 1 victory.
On the men’s side final, Colwyn Abgrall of Southwood Golf & Country Club squared off against Austin Dobrescu of Shilo Country Club. The match went to Dobrescu who capped off his 3 & 1 victory with a birdie on the 35th hole.
The Match Play Championship is the first official competitive event of the Golf Manitoba 2019 Championship Schedule. Next up, the Bantam Junior and Women’s City & District Championships being held June 22 & 23 at the Carman Golf & Curling Club.

The Golf Manitoba Match Play Championship Finals are set for June 15 at Breezy Bend Country Club.
In the senior men’s division, Garth Collings of Breezy Bend Country Club will take on Tom Humniski of Elmhurst Golf & Country Club in the 18-hole final. The two will tee-off at 1:15pm.
In the women’s final match, defending champion Hannah Diamond of St. Charles Country Club will face-off against the 2018 Manitoba Junior Girl’s Champion, Bobbi Uhl of Shilo Country Club. The women will play 36-holes to determine the winner with the first match of the day starting at 8:00am.
On the men’s side final, Colwyn Abgrall of Southwood Golf & Country Club will look to improve on his runner-up finish in 2018 in a 36-hole dual against Austin Dobrescu of Shilo Country Club. The 36-hole men’s final begins at 8:07am.

The semi-final matches for the 2019 Golf Manitoba Match Play Championship are now set. In the men’s division, defending champion Jordy Lutz of Elmhurst Golf & Country Club will take on Colwyn Abgrall of Southwood Golf & Country Club. Abgrall and Lutz are no strangers in match play competition with the two meeting in last year’s championship final where Lutz edged Abgrall 2 & 1 to take the title. Club-mates Austin Dobrescu and Drew Jones, both of Shilo Country Club, will go head-to-head in match two of the men’s semi-finals.
In the women’s semi-finals, 2018 defending champion Hannah Diamond of St. Charles County Club will play Charmaine Mackid of Breezy Bend. 2018 finalist Bobbi Uhl of Shilo Country Club will take on Shannon Wales of Glendale Golf & Country Club in the second women’s semi-final match.
Finally, in the senior men’s division, Garth Collings of Breezy Bend Country Club will use his home course advantage where he will take on David Klowak of Kildonan Park Golf Course. Gord Hudson also of Breezy Bend, will meet Elmhurst’s Tom Humniski in the second semi-final match.
The senior men’s semi-final matches will be held on June 11 while the men’s and women’s division matches to go on June 12. The finals for all three divisions will be held on Saturday, June 15. All semi-final and final matches will be contested at Breezy Bend Country Club.
WINNIPEG – The 2019 Golf Manitoba Championship season officially began with the Match Play Championship Qualifier held May 25 & 26 at Portage Golf Club in Portage La Prairie. Colwyn Abgrall of Southwood Golf & Country Club took top honours in the men’s division shooing a 3-under score of 137 on rounds of 66 and 71. With his finish, Abgrall holds the top seed of the 32 competitors who now move on to the Championship Matches.
Bobbi Uhl of Shilo Country Club fired a two day total of 155 to take the top seed in the women’s division while Garth Collings of Breezy Bend finished at 143 to take top seed in the senior division. Full results of the qualifier are available HERE >>.
