Carleton Golf and Yacht Club set to host 2024 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, presented by BDO

Manotick, Ont. – The 156-player field will gather August 19-23 for the 2024 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at the Carleton Golf and Yacht Club in Manotick, Ont.
The Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship is a 72-hole stroke play event, with a 36-hole cut to the low 70 players and ties happening after the second round. The championship also includes an inter-provincial team competition that will take place over the first two rounds of play. The lowest two scores out of three team members, over 36-holes will determine the winner of the Inter-Provincial Team Championship. The Mid-Amateur division will run concurrently with the Mid-Master division for players 40 and older. 145 Canadian competitors are joined in the field this week by 11 Americans —namely the 2023 runner up and third place finishers: Ryan Terry (Tennessee) and Derek Meinhart (Illinois).

Joseph Deraney of Belden, Miss. won the 2023 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, following rounds of 72-69-69-68 for a total score of 10-under (278), enroute to claiming the national title. Deraney will not be competing in Manotick.
The field comprised of golfers aged 25-and-over, will navigate the scenic and challenging layout that winds its way through mature trees, lush fairways and picturesque water features. The Carleton Golf and Yacht Club is known for its past rich history, hosting various championships and national events including the PGA Seniors’ Championship.
Established in 1963 by American entrepreneur Mort Kalin, who had a vision to build the first community in North America to integrate housing and golf, Carleton is situated in the centre of a dynamic community actively connected to the Club. Surrounded by houses and bordering the Rideau River, it originally featured a yacht club and is the only course in Ottawa accessible from the water. Dedicated members and a commitment to creating a superior golf experience has resulted in a premier course that offers many challenges. The Club prides itself on creating friendships and lasting memories through golf and social activities.

Charles Fitzsimmons of King, Ont. won the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship back-to-back years in 2021 and 2022 and placed third at the 2019 championship. He returns this year hoping to etch his name on the national title for a third time.
Previous winners of the championship include one of Canada’s top-ranked men amateur golfers, Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont., who won the event three years in a row from 2014-2016; Graham Cooke who won it seven times between 1987 and 2002; and Stu Hamilton who won it on four separate occasions between 1990 and 1994.
Manitoba is will be well represented this week with 11 players teeing it up on Tuesday. Representing Team Manitoba in the inter-provincial team competition is 2024 Diamond Athletic Men’s Mid-Amateur Champion Allan MacDonald (Breezy Bend Country Club), Drew Jones (Shilo Country Club) and Lyle MacKenzie (Niakwa Country Club). Rounding out the field is Bobby McNair (Carman G & CC), Patrick Perrin (Elmhurst G & CC), Tyson Ehnes (Lorette GC), Skyler Thomas (Pine Ridge GC), Marshall Cox (Southwood G & CC), 2022 Canadian Men’s Mid-Master Champion Curtis Markusson (St. Charles CC), David White (St. Charles CC), and Thomas Friesen (Wheat City GC).
In addition to the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur title, the 2024 champion will receive direct exemptions into the 2024 U.S Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship and 2025 Canadian Men’s Amateur & Mid-Amateur Championships.
Practice rounds are scheduled for Monday, August 19, before the 72-hole stroke play competition kicks off on Tuesday, August 20. Play wraps up on Friday, August 23, followed by an awards ceremony.

Giordani-Gross finishes T56 at the 2024 Canadian Junior Boys Championship

Innisfail, Alta. – Zostrianos Giordani-Gross shot a final round score of 2-over par 74 at the 2024 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, presented by BDO at Innisfail Golf Club in Innisfail, Alberta. The Shilo Country Club member and 2024 Manitoba Junior Boys Champion finished the 72-hole event at 12-over par on rounds of 72-78-76-74 placing him in a tie for 56th place.
Payne Wood (Team Manitoba) of the St. Boniface Golf Club also made the 36-hole cut with rounds of 74-73-86-74 for a 19-over par score of 307 placing him in a tie for 69th place. Earlier in the week, Giordani-Gross, Wood and Carson Inman (Team Manitoba / Portage Golf Club) finished in 6th place in the inter-provincial team competition of the championship.
Isaiah Ibit of of Orleans, Ontario, entered the final round two shots back of 54-hole leader Charlie Gillespie of Calgary, Alberta. Ibit, a Team Canada NextGen member, shot a final round of 6-under par 66 to finish the event at 16-under par and 5 shots clear of Gillespie.

Payne Wood is the low Manitoban after 36-holes of play
Innisfail, Alta. – Carson Inman, Zostrianos Giordana-Gross and Payne Wood concluded the 36-hole inter-provincial team competition of the 2024 Canadian Junior Boys Championship with a final round score of of 7-over par 151 placing them in 6th place. Wood (Team Manitoba / St. Boniface Golf Club) shot second round score one-over par round of 73 while Giordani-Gross of (Shilo Country Club) contributed with a 6-over par round of 78. Carson Inman (Team Manitoba / Portage Golf Club) was 13-over for the day shooting 87.
Team Ontario has successfully defended their title as the Inter-Provincial Team champions. Team Ontario entered the day with a two-shot lead over Team British Columbia (B.C.) and that is exactly how things would end, as the defending champions finished with a combined 10-under score to win back-to-back team championships.
Both Payne (T40) and Giordani-Gross (T59) made the 36-hole cut with scores of 147 and 150 respectively.
Spencer Shropshire of Ramana, Ontario, leads the way carding his second straight round of 6-under par 66 putting him two shots in front of first round leader Matthew Javier.

Giordani-Gross top Manitoban through opening round at Canadian Junior Boys Championship

Zostrianos Giordani-Gross (Shilo Country Club) shot even par 72 to open the Canadian Junior Boys Championship in Innisfail, Alberta. Giordani-Gross is the highest ranking Manitoban on the leaderboard at T23.
Matthew Javier of Toronto and British Columbia’s Austin Krahn share first place on the leaderboard at 7-under par 65.
Team Manitoba (Giordani-Gross, Inman, Wood) sits fifth in the Inter-Provincial Team Championship at 2-over par 146. Team Ontario is first at 8-under par 136.

Adam Blair (Team Manitoba / Pine Ridge Golf Club) and Jeri Lafleche (Niakwa Country Club) struck gold in the respective Boys and Girls divisions at the Manitoba Summer Games powered by Manitoba Hydro at Gilbert Plains Country Club.
Carding a final round 75, to finish the 36 hole championship at 152, Blair erased a three stroke deficit entering his final round to earn a one stroke victory over Team East’s Brady Comaskey (Team Manitoba / Pine Ridge). Comaskey shot a 78 Tuesday to end play at 153 for a silver medal while first round leader Winnipeg Gold’s Brayden Boge (Team Manitoba / Pine Ridge) takes home a bronze medal after an 80.
Winnipeg Blue won the Team Championship by two strokes over Winnipeg Gold.
Lafleche won Gold in the girls event with a 16 stroke victory over Team West’s Payton Oakden (Team Manitoba / Glendale Golf & Country Club). Lafleche shot a 78 Tuesday to finish at 155 while Oakden had an 80. Team Winnipeg Blue’s Jewel Lafleche (Niakwa) won the bronze medal at 181 following a final round 89.
Winnipeg Gold also won the Team Championship. Winnipeg Blue placed second.
Four Manitobans in the field as 2024 Canadian Junior Boys Championship tees off at Innisfail Golf Club
The 2024 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, presented by BDO tees off this morning with a field of 156 junior golfers competing over four rounds at Innisfail Golf Club in Innisfail, Alberta.
“We have a great field ready to compete for our prestigious Canadian Junior Boys Championship,” said Sam Brown, Tournament Director, Golf Canada. “We’d like to thank the staff and volunteers at Innisfail Golf Club for all the work they’ve put in to prepare the golf course as we welcome some of Canada’s best young talent to Innisfail. The club has great experience hosting a number of provincial championships and we are excited to get play underway.”
Innisfail Golf Club is hosting the Canadian Junior Boys Championship while celebrating its centennial year. Established in 1924, the Bill Robinson designed course features 27 holes with three different 9-hole courses each with a scenic and diverse experience. The tournament will be contested on the Aspen and Spruce nines. Innisfail Golf Club has previously hosted the Alberta Men’s Amateur Championship on three occasions as well as the Alberta Senior Ladies Championship.
“We are so proud to be hosting an event like this with the best young talent in the field from across the nation. The club has been around for 100 years and can be challenging for many. Diligent strategy is required to play well here or may find some of the tough shots out there in a hurry. Subtle, yet distinct…pictures don’t the contours or elevation changes justice,” said Jeff McDowall, Head Professional, Innisfail Golf Club. “We hope those who are playing enjoy the experience at Innisfail Golf Club and all competitors do their best in the pursuit for a national championship title.”
Established in 1938 with the first championship played at London Hunt and Country Club in London, Ont., the Canadian Junior Boys Championship has given Canadians a glimpse into the future glory that many of its champions have gone on to enjoy. Canadian Golf Hall of Famers Doug Silverberg, George Knudson, Gary Cowan, and Doug Roxburgh have all won the Silver Cup before moving on to amateur and professional careers.
2023 RBC Canadian Open champion Nick Taylor won the Junior in 2006, the only Canadian male golfer to win the trifecta of national championships comprised of the Canadian Junior Boys, Canadian Men’s Amateur, and Canada’s National Men’s Open Championship. Brooke Henderson who is the lone female Canadian golfer to win the Canadian Junior Girls, Canadian Women’s Amateur, and the CPKC Women’s Open.
In addition to the 18-and-under Junior Championship, the 17-and-under Juvenile Championship was added in 1970, with the winner receiving the Jack Bailey Trophy. Since its inception, only 11 golfers have won both the Juvenile and Junior titles — Jim Rutledge, Jeff Makahon, Rob McMillan, Jesse Collinson, Dustin Risdon, Gord Scutt, Rafael Lee, Mitch Sutton, Charles-Éric Bélanger, Christopher Vandette and Alex Zhang.
The Junior and Juvenile championship rounds are played concurrently over four rounds, with the low 70 players plus ties in the Junior division and a minimum of ten players in the Juvenile division advancing to the final 36 holes. The Junior Inter-Provincial Team Championship will be played over the first 36 holes, where teams will compete for the Junior Inter-Provincial Championship Trophy. Last year, Team Ontario finished three shots clear of Team British Columbia to win the championship.
The Junior champion of the Canadian Junior Boys Championship earns an exemption into the 2025 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship as well as the 2025 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.

Boge’s 74, who is representing Team Winnipeg Gold, is good for a one stroke lead in the Boys event on Team East’s Brady Comaskey (Team Manitoba / Pine Ridge) and a three stoke advantage on both Team Winnipeg Blue’s Adam Blair (Team Manitoba / Pine Ridge) and Team South’s Ryder St. Laurent (Team Manitoba / Niakwa)
Winnipeg Gold leads the Team Championship at 237, two strokes better than Team East.
Carding a 77, Lafleche is 14 strokes clear in the Girls event of Team West’s Payton Oakden (Team Manitoba / Glendale Golf & Country Club). Team Winnipeg Blue’s Jewel Lafleche (Niakwa) sits third on the leaderboard at 92.
Winnipeg Gold also leads the Team Championship at 173. They are 18 strokes better than Winnipeg Blue.

Kuntz finishes T3 at Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship

Braxton Kuntz (Breezy Bend Country Club) shot a 1-under par 71 in his final round at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship Thursday in Saskatoon to finish in a two way tie for third place.
With a 12-under par 276 total, Kuntz ended four days of competition just three strokes back of champion Tyler Mawhinney of Florida.
Kuntz’s round featured four birdies and 11 pars along with three bogeys.
Marco Trstenjak (Elmhurst Golf & Country Club) was the only other Manitoban to make the cut and finished T74 on the leaderboard at 9-over par 297.
