Competitive Player Session

What Golfers in Competitions Need to Know about the New Rules of Golf.

The rules of golf were substantially revised effective January 1, 2019.  There have already been a few highly-publicized incidents on the professional tours regarding application of the new rules.

Golf Manitoba wants to assist any golfer who may play in one of its event to have a practical understanding of how the new Rules affect competitive play.  You are invited to attend a free Player’s Rule Session at the Glendale Golf & Country Club on April 16, from 7 – 8:30 pm.

The objectives are to provide you with the key changes to the rules, how to avoid problems, and to answer any of your questions.  We will have Golf Manitoba “referees” (that is the new name for “rules officials”) conducting the session.

For further details or to register, please contact Director of Competitions, Lisa Andersen at lisa@golfmb.ca.

2019 Winter Rules Sessions

Golf Manitoba will be hosting free education clinics during the winter for Golf Manitoba members and non-members who want to learn more about the rules of golf.  If you are a casual or competitive golfer, work in golf or want to volunteer with Golf Manitoba, you will find these sessions to be fun and informative.  All clinics are from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

2019 is a year of change in golf with the release of the 2019 Rules of Golf which will take effect on January 1, 2019.  The format of the education sessions will be to review the current rules, indicate how they will change in 2019 and work through some examples (the “hole questions”) to give you practical experience in determining how a rule applies.  Of course, you will be able to ask our instructors any rules question you like.

These are very relaxed seminars – whether you know everything or nothing about the rules of golf, you will take something positive out of these sessions.  Even better, you can come to one or all of the four clinics  – they are held independent of one another so you won’t miss anything if you cannot attend one session and you won’t have to endure repeat information if you attend all four.

*Note: If you plan on attending our winter rules seminars, we strongly encourage to download the free R&A Rules of Golf App or purchase a copy of the 2019 Player’s Edition of the Rules of Golf so that you may follow along during the seminars. We will have a limited supply of the Player’s Edition available for purchase at the seminars.

Handicap Session

Since 2003, Golf Manitoba and Golf Canada have been providing member clubs with educational sessions relating to the handicap system.  To date, approximately four hundred participants have attended these seminars.

The seminar is being offered as part of the copyright agreement between Golf Canada and the United States Golf Association (USGA) to try and maintain a consistent manner in which the handicap system is utilized.  Each member club is required to have at least one person participate in the seminar.  Golf Manitoba would encourage clubs to consider both volunteers and staff to attend.  These people will then become resources at the club level for all handicap inquiries.  If you have already had someone attend, we would also encourage you to send others.

***Please note that due to the introduction of the World Handicap System in 2020, Golf Manitoba will not be hosting a Handicap Seminar in 2019. More information on the World Handicap System and its implementation will be available in 2019.  For more information on the World Handicap System, please click HERE >>.
